Who shall be responsible for:
- Administering the TFD Hearing Loss Prevention Program
- Ensuring TFD personnel receive hearing tests and training in accordance with the guidelines set forth in this document
- Issuing an annual schedule for hearing testing and training
- Maintaining this document
The Administrative Battalion Chief for Safety
Who shall be responsible for ensuring that TFD personnel:
- Wear hearing protection in accordance with the guidelines set forth in this document
- Participate in annual hearing testing and training
TFD Battalion Chiefs
Who shall be responsible for:
- Selecting and wearing hearing protection in accordance with the guidelines set forth in this document
- Participating in annual hearing testing and training
TFD uniformed personnel, electricians and Fire Garage personnel
Who shall:
a. Ensure that TFD personnel receive:
i. Annual hearing tests
ii. Annual training on hearing loss prevention and the use and care of TFD provided hearing protection
b. Issue an annual schedule that includes–
i. Location and times for TFD personnel to attend hearing testing and training while on duty
ii. Re-test dates as needed for TFD personnel who missed the regular annual training and testing

Who shall ensure that TFD personnel wear proper hearing protection whenever possible?
TFD Battalion Chiefs
TFD personnel shall use hearing protection when:
a. Exposed to 85 dBA TWA8 or greater
b. Exposed to noise in excess of 115 dBA from power tools, lawn mowers, leaf blowers, engine warm ups, pumping, drafting or other such activities
c. Training, drilling and/or investigating alarms and emergency incidents that involve, but are not limited to, the following–
i. Use of chain saws, circular saws and/or rescue tools
ii. Exposure to accidental, malicious or malfunctioning alarm systems
iii. Use of aerial equipment
iv. Pump testing
v. EMS scenes in high noise level areas
TFD personnel also shall wear radio/intercom headsets, where provided, when:
a. Responding Priority to an incident scene
b. Pumping with a TFD apparatus
When may TFD personnel opt to not wear hearing protection?
when doing so would create an additional hazard, such as when engaged in fire suppression activities.
TFD personnel shall do what two things prior to hearing tests?
a. Wear adequate hearing protection while on duty if exposed to any noise prior to the hearing test
b. Avoid high levels of noise exposure for 14 hours before the hearing test
