5 - Deep Brain Stimulation Flashcards
2 phases of DBS
Electrode to brain
Pulse generator
DBS adjustment
How does DBS work
Antidromic inhibition
Stimulation of inhibitory nerves
What is the DBS target for Parkinson’s disease
Subthalamic Nucleus
What is the DBS target for tremors
Thalamus
What is the DBS target for dystonia
Globus pallidus interna
4 classic features of parkinson’s
Resting tremor
Postural instability Bradykinesia
Rigidity
Problem with DBS
Doesn’t give you the dopamine so movement is okay but do not feel good
What is dystonia
• Sustained or repetitive muscle contractions result in twisting and repetitive movements or abnormal fixed postures.
Cause of dystonia
DYT1 mutation
Less common indications of DBS
Neuropathic pain, poorly controlled epilepsy, refractory depression
