Stroke Definition
rapidly progressive clinical symptoms and signs of focal, and at times global, loss of cerebral function lasting more than 24 hours or leading to death with no apparent cause other than that of vasculature origin

o Charcot-bouchard micro aneurysms
o Microbleeds
o Haemorrhagic transformation of infarcts
o Vasculitis
Causes of ICH
o Primary – Hypertension (microaneurysm)
o Secondary – Trauma, tumour, drugs, coagulopathy
Complications of ICH
o Local damage
o Local mass effect/herniation
o Raised ICP
o Hydrocephalus
What percent are ischaemic strokes
70-80%
What is penumbra
ischemic but still viable cerebral tissue
Cause of ischaemic stroke

o Pathologies – Atherosclerosis (50%), Arteriosclerosis (25%), Cardiac embolism/AF (15%), Carotid dissection (<5%), Other – Haematological, vasculitis
