What is the two factor theory?
About job satisfaction and dissatisfaction. Suggests some factors have the potential to provide positive satisfaction and others to reduce it.
What do Herzberg’s factors include?
Sense of achievement.
Recognition for effort and achievement.
The nature of the work itself - that it is meaningful and interesting.
Responsibility.
Promotion and improvement opportunities.
What are hygiene factors?
Factors that can reduce job dissatisfaction.
What do hygiene factors include?
Company policy and administration e.g. paperwork, rules etc.
Supervision, especially if they believe they are over supervised.
Interpersonal relationships with supervisors and peers.
working conditions.
What is noticeable about hygiene factors?
They surround the job but do not include the job itself.
What will hygiene factors not do?
Motivate employees in the long term.
What is movement?
Short term or temporary motivation.
What does herzberg define motivation as?
When someone wants to do something for its own sake.
