3.3.3.3 Ozone depletion Flashcards

1
Q

How do chlorine atoms catalyse

the decomposition of ozone?

A

Cl• + O3 → ClO• + O2
and ClO• + O3 → 2O2 + Cl•
Overall: 2O3 = 3O2

Q

Why do CFCs damage the ozone?

A

Chlorine atoms are formed in the upper atmosphere
when ultraviolet radiation causes C–Cl bonds in
chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) to break
Chlorine atoms catalyse the decomposition of ozone

Q

What were CFCs replaced by?

A

HCFCs: less reactive so it doesn’t break and damage the ozone
