3.1.2.5 Balanced Equations And Associated Calculations Flashcards
What is atom economy?
The amount of product that is usable
(Mass of desired products / total mass of reactants) X 100
How do you work out percentage yield?
Actual yield
—————- X 100
Theoretical yield
What are the issues affecting percentage yield?
Impurities, human error, contamination, limiting reactant, reversible reaction, systematic error, filtration, gas leaks, miscalculation, humidity

What are the steps of writing an ionic equation?
- Write the full equation
- Write all the aqueous ionic compunds as separate ions
- Cancel any ions that appear on both sides of the equation
- Cancel down to the simplest ration of ions and what remains is the ionic equation
- Include state symbols
How do you work out half equations?
- Write out the full equation
- Rewrite as an ionic equation
- Seperate into two equations where one details oxidation and the other details reduction
