3.2.2 Cell Function: Golgi Apparatus Flashcards
review
- The nuclear membrane, rough and smooth ER, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, food vacuoles, and plasma membrane form an integrated system called the endomembrane system, by which protein and other molecules are synthesized and/or processed.
- The Golgi apparatus receives molecular packages from the ER in the form of transport
vesicles.
The Golgi apparatus acts as the post office of the cell. It receives proteins, lipids, and other molecular packages from the endoplasmic reticulum and processes them by performing three major functions:
- It separates proteins and lipids from the ER according to their destination.
- It modifies some molecules, especially proteins.
- It packages the materials into vesicles that are transported to other parts of the cell.
golgi apparatus
- a stack of flat membranous sacs derived from the
endoplasmic reticulum
Vesicles
- enter the cis face of the Golgi apparatus; the side that faces the endoplasmic reticulum. Vesicles leave via the
trans face; the side that faces the outside of the cell.
exocytosis
- Proteins are transferred down the Golgi apparatus by a continuous process of vesicle formation and release. The proteins enter the cis face of the Golgi apparatus. Processed material is finally released from the plasma membrane side (the trans face) of the Golgi apparatus by exocytosis.
All of the following are functions of the Golgi apparatus except
- protein synthesis
Choose the correct order of the events of glycoprotein processing.
- rough ER to transport vesicles to cis region of Golgi apparatus to trans region of Golgi apparatus
True or false?
Docking molecules will be found on the cis face of the Golgi apparatus.
- true
Which of the following statements regarding the orientation of the Golgi apparatus is correct?
- The cis face of the Golgi, the receiving side, is typically near the ER
The __________ consists of stacked, membranous sacs. The cytosolic side of __________ is studded with ribosomes. __________ are membrane-bound compartments in the cytoplasm.
- Golgi apparatus; the rough endoplasmic reticulum; vesicles
Cisternae
- are flattened stacks of membrane that make up the Golgi apparatus.
Transport vesicles
- transfer proteins from the ER to the Golgi apparatus
