Q

What experiment did Hammerling preform?
When?

A
  • experiments on unicelluar alge
  • switched out the nucleus in the “foot” of the plant and found that the new growth’s characteristics were based on the nucleus
  • occured in 1930

Q

What did scientists Hershey and Chase discover in 1952?

A

Their experiments proved that viruses injected in nucleic acids instead of protiens, meaning inheritable material came from the nucleus and not proteins as it was theorized

Q

Who published the first structure of DNA and when? What is the controversy behind it?

A
  • Watson and Crick in 1953
  • It was actually Rosalind Fraklin, using the lab of Maurice Wilkiens, who used x-ray crystallography to take photos of DNA molecues and discovered the double helix shape.
  • Watson was visiting the image and was able to read these images. Rosalind did not get credit

Q

What is Chargaff’s Rule and who discovered it?

A

Erwin found that there were equal amounts of base pairs in DNA, and only certian bases paired with eachother.
ie: A & T, and C & G
