2.4 - Pyruvate Oxidation Flashcards
1
Q
What is the name of the transport protein used to bring pyruvate into the mitochondria?
A
Pyyruvate dehydrogenase
2
Q
What are the 3 steps of pyruvate oxidation?
A
1) carboxylation: one C molecule is removed
2) oxidation: a hydrogen is removed and joined to form NADH
3) CoEnzyme A is added: stablizes the molecule and creates acetyl-CoA. ( chain has 2 carbons, and a sulfer with CoA attatched to one C)
[ALL HAPPENING TWICE b/c 2 pyruvates are made from glycolysis]
3
Q
Where does pyruvate oxidation occur?
A
In the mitochondria matrix.
