Recap the Kreb’s Cycle

A
  • acetyl-CoA enters the cycle
  • acetyl-CoA (2C) joins with oxaloacetate(4C) to create a 6 carbon molecule called cictric acid
  • Two carbons are removed from the chain, each to form CO2
  • makes 3 NADH
  • makes 1 ATP
  • makes 1 FADH
  • reforms to make oxaloacetate

Why use FADH in the kreb’s cycle?

A
  • low energy e- carrier (makes less ATP than NADH)
  • helps convert succinate (step 6) to fumarate (step 7)
  • does not waste energy: is not exothermic enough to reduce to NAD but instead to FAD
