2.5 - Kreb's Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
What is another name for the kreb’s cycle?
A
Cictric acid cycle
2
Q
What are the 3 terms we need to know from kreb’s cycle?
A
Acetyl-CoA, oxaloacetate, and citric acid

Q
Recap the Kreb’s Cycle
A
- acetyl-CoA enters the cycle
- acetyl-CoA (2C) joins with oxaloacetate(4C) to create a 6 carbon molecule called cictric acid
- Two carbons are removed from the chain, each to form CO2
- makes 3 NADH
- makes 1 ATP
- makes 1 FADH
- reforms to make oxaloacetate

Q
Why use FADH in the kreb’s cycle?
A
- low energy e- carrier (makes less ATP than NADH)
- helps convert succinate (step 6) to fumarate (step 7)
- does not waste energy: is not exothermic enough to reduce to NAD but instead to FAD
