Q

Local Anesthesia

A

Agents that cause a specific area of the body to be insensitive to pain
Interfere with nerve impulse transmission to specific areas
Do not cause loss of consciousness

Q

General Anesthesia

A

agents induce global anesthesia, with varying degrees of:
- Pain relief
- Depression of consciousness
- Skeletal muscle relaxation
- Reflex reduction

Q

Neuromuscular anesthetics. What do they do?

A

AKA neuromuscular blocking drugs

Provide moderate sedation
- Nerve transmission is prevented
- Paralysis of muscles
- Requires mechanical ventilation
- Facilitate intubatio and/or improve surgical conditions

Ex: rocuronium, pancuronium

Q

Adjunct anesthetics

A

Any drug that is used in combination with anesthetic drugs to help control adverse effects or maintain the anesthetic state

Ex: NBD with general anesthetics

Q

What comprises the assessment before administering anesthetics?

A
  • Previous experiences with anesthetics
  • Allergies, current medications, alcohol and illicit drug use
  • Pregnancy
  • VS, baseline bloodwork, ECG, oximetry
  • Motor, sensory, and cognitive assessment
  • Ensure pre-procedure work-up is complete
17
Q

Nursing implications regarding anesthetics intra and post procedure

A

VS, ABC
Temperature: sudden spike may indicate malignant hyperthermia
CV and respiratory for depression
S&S of bleeding
Orientation to surroundings
Reinforce pre-operative teaching
