Non-opioid analgesic definition. What drugs are considered non-opioid analgesics?
Analgesics that are structurally and functionally different from opioids
All drugs in the NSAID class (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen) are non-opioid analgesics
Acetaminophen. Where is it sold?
A non-opioid analgesic, antipyretic, and mild anti-inflammatory
Solt OTC and in combination with opioids
Mechanism of Action
Blocks pain impulses periphally by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis
Lowers febrile body temperature by acting on the hypothalamus (regulates body temperature)
- heat dissipates through resulting vasodilation and increased peripheral blood flow
Indications
Treats mild to moderate pain
Treats fever
Contraindications
Known drug allergy
Liver disease
Genetic G6PD enzyme deficiency
Adverse effects
Rash
Nausea and vomiting
Blood disorders or dyscrasias
Kidney function when taken with alcohol
Hepatotoxicity
Dose
Max 4000 mg/24hr divided into q4-6h doses
Be aware of acetaminophen content of other drugs
Toxicity (Antidote?)
Lethal when od (intentional or long-term use)
Long-term large dose leads to nephropathy
(deterioration of kidney function)
Antidote: acetycysteine (mucomyst)
