20 - Beyond Mendel Flashcards
Incomplete dominance
when neither of two alleles in a gene pair completely dominates the other
co-dominance
the situation in which the phenotypes of both alleles are exhibited in the heterozygote because both alleles affect the phenotype in separate, distinguishable ways.
Multiple alleles
refer to the presence of more than two alternative forms of a gene that can exist at a particular genetic locus
Epistasis
A type of gene interaction in which the phenotypic expression of one gene alters that of another independently inherited gene
Melanin
is a natural pigment found in most organisms, responsible for the color of skin, hair, and eyes in humans and other animals
Melanosome
is an organelle found within melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin. Melanosomes are the site of melanin synthesis, storage, and transport.
Melanocyte
is a specialized cell responsible for the production of melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes.
Pleiotropy
the ability of a single gene to have multiple effects
Polygenic inheritance
An additive effect of two or more genes on a single phenotypic character
