06 - Cytoskeleton and motors Flashcards
Cytoskeleton
A network of microtubules, microfilaments, and intermediate filaments that extend throughout the cytoplasm
Motor proteins
A protein that interacts with cytoskeleton elements and other cell components, producing movement of the whole cell or parts of the cell
Microtubules
A hollow rod composed of tubulin proteins that makes up part of the cytoskeleton in all eukaryotic cells and is found in cilia and flagella
Microtubules VS actin filaments
in contrast to microtubules, actin filaments bear tension (pulling forces)
Microtubules VS intermediate filaments
Doesn’t have directionality, in the middle of microtubules and actin filaments
Tubulin
A dimer consisting of an alpha tubulin and beta tubulin
Actin
A globular protein that links into two chains, which twist helically, forming microfilaments
Microtubule nucleators
Centrosome- Microtubule organizing center, important during cell division
Centriole - A structure in the centrosome composed of cylinder of microtubule
Cilia
Cellular extensions that contain microtubules
Flagella
Microscopic hair like structures involved in the locomotion of a cell
