Q

why is Vanadium a good choice for redox reactions

A

because all its ions form a distinct colour so it would be easy to see a clear change in the oxidation number by observing the colour change

Q

how do we reduce Vanaduim from 5+ to 2+

A

We get the Ammonuin vanadate(v) (NH4VO3) make it into an acidic solution to form Diooxovanaduim(V) ions (V^5+) then add zinc to this solution and see a gradual colour change from yellow to blue to green to purple since it goes from 5+ to 4+ to 3+ to 2+ oxidation number

Q

why is the reduction reaction of V^2+ to V with Zinc thermodynamically infeasible

A

that is because V^2+ is a better-reducing agent since it has a more negative E value, so no electrons from zinc will be released with respect of V^2+
