15A.1 Flashcards
what are the different types of isomerism
page 108
what are structural isomerism
isomers with the same molecular formula but different structural formula
functional group isomer differ in
there functional groups, ethanol, ethenone
chain isomer differ in
patterns of branching in their carbon chains
positional isomers differ in
the position of the functional group i.e which carbon its attached to
what are stereoisomerism
they are isomers who have the same structural formula but differ in their atoms, or groups are arranged differently in 3 dimensions
geometric isomers differ in
their atoms or group are attached at different positions on opposite sides of the double C=C bond
what are optical isomers
two compounds that are non superimposable images of each other but other wise there the same
what is chiral
an chiral atom in molecule is the one that allows it to exist as non-superimposable forms, its can also refer to the molecule itself
what is an asymmetric carbon atom
is that that is joined to 4 different atoms or groups
so in 3D models of bonds a dashed line represents
below the plane of the paper
in 3D models of bonds a wedge-shaped lines represents
into the plan of the paper
in 3D models of bonds a ordinary line represents
on the plan of the paper
so asterisk beside a carbon atom indicates
that the carbon is a chiral centre and is known as asymmetric carbon atom
what are enantiomers
isomers that are related as objects and mirror images
