17A.1 Flashcards
what is a transitional metal
an element that forms a 1 or more stable ions with incompletely filled d-orbitals
what are the characteristics of transition metals (6)
- hard solids
- high Mp and Bp
- act as catalysts
- form coloured ions and coloured compounds
- form ions with different oxidation number
- form ions with incompletely filled d-orbitals
why isn’t Zn and Sc considered to be transition metal
they only form one ion and their compounds aren’t coloured
what transition metals don’t fit within the electronic configuration
Cu. Cr since they only fill one electron in the 4s orbital before they fill in the D orbital, where usually the 4s orbital would be full entirely
high oxidation number ions form
only in complex ions, as Mn^7+ cant occur but Mn can have 7+ in ions such as MnO4^-
when transition metals loose their electrons they first lose them from which orbital
their 4s
where are transition metals with higher nuclear number less likely to have a high oxidation number
because their is a stronger electrostatic force so it is less likely that their electrons are used in bonding
