Conductive hearing loss

A

involves a mechanical dysfunction of the external or middle ear. If the sound is loud enough (amplified) the person is able to hear. Cerumen, foreign bodies, perforated eardrum and otosclerosis are possible causes of this type of hearing loss.

Sensorineural or perceptive hearing loss

A

ndicates a pathological condition of cranial nerve Vlll. Increasing the amplitude may not enable the person to hear. Common causes are ototoxic drugs (gentamycin) and presbycusis a gradual degeneration of the nerve that occurs with aging, may be the cause.
