Conductive hearing loss
involves a mechanical dysfunction of the external or middle ear. If the sound is loud enough (amplified) the person is able to hear. Cerumen, foreign bodies, perforated eardrum and otosclerosis are possible causes of this type of hearing loss.
Sensorineural or perceptive hearing loss
ndicates a pathological condition of cranial nerve Vlll. Increasing the amplitude may not enable the person to hear. Common causes are ototoxic drugs (gentamycin) and presbycusis a gradual degeneration of the nerve that occurs with aging, may be the cause.
Otosclerosis
gradual hearing loss that causes the footplate of the stapes to become fixed in the oval window. Common in 20-40yrs
Presbycusis
hearing loss that occurs with agin. gradual sensorineural loss caused by nerve degeneration in the inner ear or auditory nerve
