1.3 Biochemical Reactions (CQ - Exam) Flashcards
1
Q
Differentiate between a hydrolysis reaction and a condensation reaction.
A
Condensation reactions joins 2 molecules by removing water
Hydrolysis reaction breaks a larger molecule into 2 smaller molecules by adding water
2
Q
Meaning of the term enzyme-substrate complex. .
A
- Enzyme breaks bonds in the substrate and catalyzing the reaction
- The substrate enters into the enzyme at the active site
- When enzyme forms around the substrate’s shape is called an induced fit
3
Q
Clearly explain how an enzyme can take part in a reaction that involves sucrose but not in a reaction that involves maltose.
A
- Sucrose and maltose look similar in structure but due to the slight shape different, an induced fit cannot occur
- It is a lock and key fit so it will not work, the active sit is a specific shape for a specific substrate
4
Q
Would enzyme denaturation occur at the primary, secondary, or tertiary structure? Explain.
A
- Not primary
- May effect the other interactions in other stages
