Old Fashioned Sexism
- Endorsement of traditional gender roles, differential treatment of men and women, stereotypes about lesser female competence
- Women are just as capable of thinking logically as men (R)
- I would be equally comfortable having a woman as a boss as a man

Modern sexisum
- Denial of discrimination, antagonism towards women’s demands, lack of support for policies designed to help women
- more explixit/straighforward
- trying to get at denying sexium as a form of discrimination
- Women often miss out on good jobs due to sexual discrimination
- It is easy to understand why women’s groups are still concerned about societal limitations of women’s opportunities

Similar in quality to attitudes towards blacks / immigrants
•But, one difference in sexism!
•sexisum always have a large degree of intredependence
•these peoples goals are constantly intertwinned
men and women need each other to procreate
•so due to the level of interdeendence, sexisum has a dif theing than all the other ism, in this case benevolence
Benevolent Sexism
subjectivley positive
- In a disaster, women ought to be rescued first
- The problem with this is that it takes away athe autonomy of women and treats them more like children
- It keeps women in traditional roles close to the home
Benevolent Sexism has 3 aspects
–Protective paternalism
women need to be rescued first
–Complementary gender differentiation
oh women are lesser in a lot of parts but theire better morally
–Heterosexual intimacy
no mans complete without the love of a women
Hostile Sexism
- Predicts negative attitudes and stereotypes about women
- sexist antipathy towards women
- Many women are actually seeking special favours, such as hiring policies that favour them over men, under the guise of asking for “equality”
Together, Hostile and Benevolent sexism are:
Ambivalent Sexism
–Positive and negative
-Studies found tht women are more damaged by ben sexisum because its so subtle. Ben slides under the radar and people don’t see it for the long term harm it can cause.
Study: looked at views to female afventures/travelers.
Men high in hostile sexium though women shouldn’t travel. High in ben sexisum were more suported of female only travel accomidations (things that allow them to travel but protect them) and self defence classes before females travel.
Study:
examined collage students reaction from recievig a high or low grade from fem or male instructor
- higher grade the more they liked the class
- rated fem as less competent than male proffesors only if they assignened them a low grade and not a high grade.
- Students grades did not affect the ratings of the male professors
Study:
Where’s the baseline?
Did people who got bad evaluations from a woman apply the negative stereotype to derogate her, or did people who got good evaluations suppress the stereotype to credit her?
Is is that women are precived as nice and the bad feedback shifts and triggers the sterotype.
Is it motivated by self enhancement or because its unexpected (don’t expect fem to give negative feedback, therefore norm violation)
half of the participants reciveved feedback for themselves
half just listened to feedback being given to someone else. Observers are getting evaluated
Observers did not show the same pattern as actual participants: they rated male and female managers equally highly, regardless of the valence of the feedback
Therefore wan’t a norm violation and was instread motivated by self enhancement.
