10.1 Memory models Flashcards
WHat are the two memory models?
- (multi store memory model) - Atkinson and shiffrin
- (levels of processing model) - Craik and Lockharts
WHy is memory important in sport?
allows you to remember how to perform different skills, tactics and strategies
Name the 3 stages of remembering information
-short-term sensory store (STSS)
-short-term memory (STM)
-long-term memory (LTM)
What does the multistore memory model suggest?
- 3 stages of remembering info
- each stage has certain amount of info it can hold for certain amount of time
How long can info be held in each stage of multi-store memory?
- STSS (up to 1 sec)
- STM (up to 30 sec)
- LTM (permanently)
What is the capacity of each stage in the multi memory model?
- STSS (limitless)
- STM (7 items)
- LTM (limitless)

Explain short term sensory store?
- information in form of cues -> taken in from environment using senses
- info passes into short term sensory store
- help up to 1 sec, limitless
- SELECTIVE ATTENTION takes place, most relevant info is remembered, irrelevant info forgotten
- RELEVENT info is passed to short term memory
Why is selective attention important in sport?
need to be able to concentrate on important info & block out distractions
What is selective attention?
where relevent stimuli are focused on irrelevent stimuli are fogotten
Explain short term memory
- working memory space where info from the STSS and LTM is bought together and a decision is made
-STM helds info for seven items- info is held as long as attention is held
-info is held for less than min
-info can be held in STM using chunking
What is chunking
diff pieces of info grouped togetehr & remembered as one piece of info
Explain long term memory?
-contains well-learned permamnent info collected from past experiences
-limitless in capacity
-well learned & rehearsed movement skills from STM eventually stored in LTM
- info retrieved from LTM when needed in STM workspace for comparison
Strengths of multi-store memory model ?
- simplifies memory process
- explains how those with brain damage can suffer from dysfunctional memory
Weaknesses of multi-store memory model?
-too simplified
-doesnt provide distinction between STM & LTM
