What is endometriosis?
Presence of ectopic endometrial tissue
What are uterine fibroids?
Benign tumours of the endometrium, which are oestrogen dependant (therefore shrink during menopause)
What is the most common malignancy of the female genital tract?
Endometrial carcinoma
Where is the most common location of endometrial carcinoma?
Squamo-columnar junction in cervix
What is a Nabothian cyst, and how do they form?
Mucous-filled cyst in cervix
- Formed when squamous epithelium of exocervix grows over columnar epithelium of endocervix
What is the vulval vestibule? What does it contain?
Space between the labia minora. Contains:
- External urethral orifice
- Vaginal orifice
- Bartholin’s glands
- Clitoris
How many fornices are there in a vagina?
4: Anterior, posterior and 2 x lateral
What is the arterial supply to the external female genitalia?
Pudendal arteries (from internal iliac)
What is the arterial supply to the vagina?
Uterine arteries
Vaginal arteries
What is the venous drainage of the external female genitalia?
Pudendal veins
What is the venous drainage of the vagina?
Uterine veins into:
- Vaginal venous plexuses into:
- Internal iliac veins
To which nodes does the lymphatics of the external female genitalia drain to?
Superficial inguinal nodes

Pudendal nerve S2-4
What is the innervation of the uterus and superior 4/5ths of the vagina?
Uterovaginal plexus, from inferior hypogastric plexus
