Yr9 Life Processes - General Flashcards
Define Organism.
An object that carries out all the life functions
Define Non-living
An object which had never been alive
Define Cells
The building blocks of life
Define Movement
Moving the whole or part of the organisms
Define Respiration
Creating useful energy from food.
Define Sensitivity
Able to detect and respond to environmental changes
Define Reproduction
Able to produce offspring
Define Growth
Increase size or change in life stage
Define Excretion
Disposal of wastes from the body
Define Nutrition
Making or acquiring food
How does the photosynthesis process work?
Photosynthesis is the process occurring in the chloroplast where plants make glucose sugars from water and carbon dioxide using solar energy; solar energy is changed into chemical energy.
Define photosynthesis.
Plants using sunlight to synthesise nutrients from carbon dioxide and water.
What is the word equation of photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water =(light energy + chlorophyll)= glucose + oxygen
How do you speed up photosynthesis?
Increase light, increase concentration of CO2, and increase temperature.
Define Ingestion.
Food is taken into the mouth.
Define Digestion.
Food is broken down by a physical force and enzymes.
Define Absorption.
Small particles pass into the blood capillaries.
Define Assimilation.
Small food enters cells and used for cellular processes
Egestion.
Undigested food which is not used leaves the anus as faeces.
What are the two types of digestion and explain them.
Mechanical is when the shape is physically changed so it can fit through the small diameter of the digestive system
Chemical is when the bonds are broken and this allows useful chemicals to be released and dissolved in the blood
What is chlorophyll?
Chemical in chloroplasts responsible for absorption of sunlight, appears as a green pigment in leaves.
Define life process?
The process of MRS C GREN carried out by all living organisms.
Define organelle and explain its use.
Parts of a cell that have specific functions.
Define starch.
The storage of sugar in a plant.
