Yr 10 - Physics Flashcards
Name contact forces.
Friction, air and water resistant, thrust
Name non-contact forces:
Gravitational, magnetic, electrostatic
What is the SI unit of force
newton (N)
What is the effect of balanced and unbalenced forces.
Balanced is when the resultant force is 0 because all forces are equal. Unbalanced force is when the resultant force is bigger or smaller than 0.
What is the resultant force.
Sum of all the forces that act on the object.
Define friction.
The resistance an object encounters when moving on the surface of another.
Why does friction cause heat.
Because friction is caused by movement of atoms and the faster movement means more heat generated.
What axis is the independent var?
X
What axis is the dependent var?
Y
Define speed.
The rate of change of distance covered in a given time
Define acceleration.
Rate of change of speed on a given body over time
Unit speed.
m/s
Unit acceleration.
m/s²
How to calculate force.
F = MA (force = mass * accelaration)
Define mass.
Is the amount of matter an object has
Unit of mass
kg
Define weight
Is the amount of gravitational force acting on an object
Unit of weight
newtons (N)
On the moon what would be different
your weight - depends on gravity
What is gravity
10 N/kg
How is m/s² related to N/kg?
They are the same thing
Define velocity.
Combination of speed and direction.
Unit of velocity.
m/s
Example of velocity and acceleration.
V = North at 5m/s. A = 5m/s².
