Yr 11 - SCB - Physical Digestion (biology) Flashcards
1
Q
what is physical digestion
A
breaking food down without any chemical changes
2
Q
why is physical digestion important
A
allows it to flow through the digestive easier and allows enzymes to work quicker
3
Q
Where does physical occur
A
- mouth with chewing
- intestines/stomach walls
4
Q
4 types of teeth and function
A
incisors - bite food
canines - tearing food apart
premolars - crushing food (2 cusps + double root)
molars - tear/crush food (4 cusps + triple/double root)
5
Q
teeth function of herbivore teeth
A
- incisors are sharp, broad, flat for cutting plant material (sometimes only in the lower jaw)
- canines are absent/if present only found in the lower jaw but reduced and blunt. Used to bite only only when chomping plant material/ not present as no meat eaten.
- molars have a large flat with a great surface area to grind and break plant material to increase surface area for digestion
- diastema is a gap between the teeth to allow space to reposition food as its chewed
6
Q
teeth function of carnivore teeth
A
- incisors are sharp, pointed and used to cut and sharp flesh from bones
- canines are long, sharp and together with the jaw, can generate great energy force that can puncture vital organs and kill prey as well as tearing meat of them
