Yr 11 - SCB - Absorption, Assimilation & Egestion (biology) Flashcards
Define absorption
the process by which the nutrients of food move from the small intestine into the bloodstream
Purpose of absorption
To absorb the nutrients in food
what structure are involved in absorption
The small intestine is where food is absorbed. It is lined with villi and they are lined with micro villi. Nutrients are absorbed through diffusion.
What are the villi adaptations
- large blood supply
- thin epithelium wall and thin capillary walls which increases speed of diffusion
- blood has low concentration of nutrients which increases the speed of diffusion
- villi also have micro villi
Define assimilation
is the movement of digested food molecules into the cells of the body.
Define egestion
the process of removing un digested food from the body
What is the purpose of egestion
to absorb the water used up during digestion back into the body in the large intestine. the remnants are stored in the rectum until released.
