Yr 10 - Electricity Flashcards
Define electrical conducter
Substances that will allow charge to flow easily. It has a low electrical resistance.
Define electrical insulator
A substance that will not let electrical charge flow easily. It has a high electrical resistance.
Define Circuit component
Part of a circuit with a particular symbol eg bulb, switch, cell…
Define series circuit
Circuit where current flows through all components in one pathway
Define parallel circuit
Circuit where current flows through more than one pathway through components
Define fuse
A thin piece of wire that will melt when the current increases above a certain level. A safety component in a circuit.
Define circuit breaker
An automatic switch that stops the flow of electric current in a suddenly overloaded electric circuit
Define current
flow of electrical charge, measured in amperes (A)
Define voltage
electrical potential energy per unit, measured in Volts (V)
Difference between insulator and conductor
Conductors are a material which permits the electric current or heat to pass through it. Insulators restrict the electric current or heat to pass through it.
How does a conductor conduct electricity?
Metals and graphite are the only solids which are conductors. All other solids are insoluators. Metal atoms have outer electrons which are not tied to any one atom. This means the electrons are free to move around the material.
Voltage and current in series
Voltage shared, Current same
Voltage and current in parallel
Voltage same, current shared
What is the formula for voltage?
V = I*R (voltage = V) (current = I) (resistance = R)
How to measure current
connect the ammeter in series with it.
