Trade Name: Alloprin
Classification: Xanthine enzyme inhibitor
Medication Purpose: Used to treat chronic gout, hyperuricemia associated with malignancies, recurrent calcium oxate, uric acid calculi.
Route: PO, IV
Metabolism: Liver to oxypurinol
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity
Nsg. Assessments: Assess for pain, monitor uric acid levels q2wk. Monitor CBC, AST, BUN, creatinine before starting treatment, monthly; check blood glucose in diabetic pts. receiving oral anti-diabetic agents. Assess for rash, hypersensitivity reactions.
Health Teaching: Tell pt. to increase fluid intake to 2L/day to prevent stone formation, avoid taking large doses of Vit. C (stone formation may occur), maintain a diet enhancing dairy products, avoid caffeine, alcohol, report side effects.
