Classification: Biguanide
Medication Purpose: Used to treat type 2 diabetes, outcome; blood glucose at normal levels.
Route: PO
Serious Side Effects: Heart failure, lactic acidosis, thrombocytopenia
Metabolism: Unknown
Contraindications: Creatinine >1.5 mg/ml (males); diabetic ketoacidosis, metabolic acidosis, renal failure, radiographic contrast use

Nsg. Considerations: Do not use in dialysis, immediate release: give with meals, extended release: DO NOT break, crush, or chew. Asses for hypoglycemic reactions, monitor for lactic acidosis, avoid using in pregnancy/breastfeeding
Health Teaching: Teach pt. to regularly monitor blood glucose, teach symptoms of hypo/hyperglycemia and lactic acidosis, advise pt. to use on a daily basis (take in a.m to prevent hypoglycemic reactions at night). Report adverse reactions.
