Generic Name: sodium biphosphate/sodium phosphate
Trade Name: Fleet Enema, Phospho-saline
Classification: Laxative
Medication Purpose: Increases water absorption in the small intestine by osmotic action; laxative effect occurs by increased peristalsis and water retention. Used for constipation, bowel or rectal prep. for surgery, examination.
Route: PO, Rectal
Side Effects: Dysryhthmias, cardiac arrest
Metabolized: Unknown
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, rectal fissures, abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, appendicitis, acute surgical abdomen, ulcerated hemorrhoids, Na-restricted diet, renal failure, hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia, hypokalemia, hypernatremia, Addison’s disease, HF, ascites, bowel perforation, megacolon, imperforate anus.
Nsg. Considerations: Assess stools (color, amount, consistency), assess for bowel pattern, bowel sounds, flatulence, distention, increased temp., dietary patterns, exercise. Assess for cramping, rectal bleeding, nausea/vomiting
Health Teaching: Advise pt. not to use laxatives or enema for long-term therapy (bowel tone will be lost), not to use in presence of abdominal pain, instruct pt. to maintain adequate fluid consumption to help prevent constipation.
