Generic Name: finasteride
Trade Name: Propecia, Proscar
Classification: Reductase inhibitor (Androgen hormone inhibitor, hair stimulant)
Medication Purpose: Prevents development of benign prostatic hypertrophy. Reduces prostate size.
Route: PO
Side Effects: Secondary malignancy
Metabolized: Liver
Contraindications: Pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, woman who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle tabs, hypersensitivity.

Nsg Considerations: Assess urinary patterns, residual urinary volume, severely diminished urinary flow; PSA levels and digital rectal exam results before initiating therapy and periodically thereafter. Monitor liver function tests before initializing treatment.
Health Teaching: Advise pt. that pregnant women or women who become pregnant should not handle crushed tab or come into contact with semen of a pt. taking this product, inform pt. that volume of ejaculate may be decreased during treatment; impotence and libido may also occur and may continue after discontinuing treatment. Inform pt. that Propecia results may not occur for 3 mo. Inform pt. that Proscar results may not occur for 6-12 mo’s.
