Generic Name: pantoprazole
Trade Name: Panto, Pantoloc
Classification: Benzimidazole (Proton Pump Inhibitor)
Medication Purpose: Suppresses gastric secretion, used for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), severe erosive esophagitis, long-term pathological hypersecretory conditions (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome)
Route: PO, IV
Serious Side Effects: Pancreatitis, rhabdomyolysis, pneumonia, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, anaphylaxis, angioedema
Metabolism: Unknown
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to this product or benzimidazole

Nsg. Considerations: Assess MSK pain/weakness, bowel sounds q8h, serious skin reactions, electrolyte imbalances
Health Teaching: Advise pt. to report severe diarrhea, advise pts. with diabetes that hyperglycemia may occur, avoid alcohol, salicylates, ibuprofen (may cause GI irritation)
