Generic Name: traZODone !!!!!
Trade Name: Oleptro
Classification: Triazolopyridine (Antidepressant)
Medication Purpose: Selectively inhibits serotonin, norepinephrine uptake by brain, potentiates behavioral changes. Used for depression.
Route: PO
Side Effects: Suicide in children/adolescents, hypertension, paralytic ileus, hepatitis, acute renal failure, priapism, angranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia, leukopenia
Metabolized: Liver, extensively
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to tricyclics

Nsg. Considerations: Monitor BP, pulse q4hr, if systolic BP drops 20 mm Hg- hold product. Monitor blood tests: CBC, leukocytes, monitor liver function tests: AST, ALT, bilirubin. Check weight qwk (appetite may increase with product), assess ECG for flattening of T wave, bundle branch block, AV block, dysrhythmias in cariac pts. Assess mental status, monitor urinary retention and constipation, assess for withdrawal symptoms if product was discontinued abruptly.
Health Teaching: Teach pt. that therapeutic effects may take 2-3 wk, teach pt. to use caution in driving or other activities that require alertness because of drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision. Teach pt. not to crush, chew ext. release product. Caution pt. to avoid alcohol ingestion and other CNS depressants. Teach pt. not to discontinue medication quickly after long-term use, advise pt. to wear sunscreen or large hat because photosensitivity occurs, teach pt. to increase fluids, bulk in diet if constipation, urinary retention occur (especially geriatric), advise pt. to take gum, hard sugarless candy, or frequent sips of water for dry mouth.
