Generic Name: ondansetron
Trade Name: Ondissolve
Classification: 5-HT receptor antagonist (Antiemetic)
Medication Purpose: Prevents nausea/vomiting by blocking serotonin (5-HT) peripherally, centrally, and in the small intestine. Used with cancer chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and prevention of postoperative nausea/vomiting.
Route: PO, IM, IV
Side Effects: bronchospasm
Metabolized: Liver, extensively
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity; phenylketonuric hypersensitivity (oral disintegrating tab), torsades de pointes.
Nsg Considerations: Assess for absence of nausea, vomiting during chemotherapy, assess for hypersensitivity reaction (rash, bronchospasm), assess for EPS shuffling gait, tremors, grimacing, rigidity, monitor ECG in those with hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, cardiac disease and those receiving other products that increase QT. Identify if pregnancy is planned or suspected (cardiac malformations, oral clefts may occur), assess for serotonin syndrome.
Health Teaching: Instruct pt. to report diarrhea, constipation, rash, changes in respirations, or discomfort at insertion site, serotonin syndrome, EPS symptoms. Teach pt. reason for medication and expected results. Drink with full glass of water (PO).
