At the start of the war the suffragette movement threw its weight behind the effort as women began to take up roles that would have been unthinkable a few years before

To deal with the largest number of wounded, Britain’s small band of professional nurses were joined by female nursing assistants from the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VADs). Before the war, qualified female doctors treated only women and children
