Week 7 Heritability Flashcards
1
Q
What is heritability?
A
means how much of the variation in a phenotypic characteristic within a population can be attributed to genetic differences
2
Q
How is heritability coefficient interpreted?
A
- About causes of variation in traits
- NOT what causes the traits themselves
- Applies to differences within a group
- NOT differences between groups
3
Q
What is the heritability coefficient?
A
statistical estimate of the extent to which phenotypic variation in a particular group can be attributed to genetic factors
- It is a correlational term (positive value from 0 to 1)
- Often expressed as a percentage (from 0% to 100%)
- It applies to groups not individuals
4
Q
What is the difference between heredity and heritability?
A
- Heredity means the passage of characteristics from parent to offspring by way of genes
- Heritability means how much of the variation in the characteristic Within a population can be attributed to genetic differences
5
Q
What is concordance?
A
If a characteristic has a higher concordance and people who are more highly related to each otherAnd then this points to a possible genetic contributionParticularly if the people have lived in different environments
