What does a Psychotherapist/Counselor do?
A person that people go to to work through emotional and other life issues (e.g., family therapy; career counselor). Credentials can often be very varied.

What is psychology?
Psychology: the scientific study of mind and behavior
- Mind: private inner experience
- Behavior: observable actions of human beings and nonhuman animals
what does a psychiatrist do?
Medically trained doctor, who specializes in psychiatry. Can diagnosis mental disorders, prescribes medication, and treat clients using a variety of methods.
what does a clinical psychologist do?
conduct research primarily related to mental health and disorders, as well as being able to diagnose and treat clients for psychological disorders (e.g., talk therapy).
What does a psychologist typically do?
Typically has a PhD. Studies the mind and behavior. Most are researchers studying mostly typical behavior and work in a University or other research setting
Why study psychology?
- Gain Insight Into Behavior:
- It helps you understand yourself, other people, and your relationships with them
- Practical Information:
- Psychology can improve your everyday life (e.g., how to study better, make better decisions, etc.)
- Diversity of Potential Occupations & Future Employability:
- Psychology teaches you a variety of skills that are applicable in many careers (e.g., critical thinking, data analysis, problem solving, project management, etc.)
