Week 3 Lecture Intro to Research Methods in Psychology Flashcards
What is an advantage of a case study?
Focus on rare behaviour and can generate new hypothesese.
What is a disadvantage of case studies?
Findings might not generalize
What is applied research?
- Uses basic research to solve real-world problems
- Aims to improve quality of life
Generally how are basic research and applied research different?
Basic research is focussed on explaining behaviour where is applied research is more focussed on influencing or changing behaviour
What are the cons of survey research methods?
- Relies on self report
- Social desirability bias
What is a random sampling?
- To obtain a representative sample
- Every member of the Population has an equal Probability of being chosen for the survey
how can participants change the behaviour during natural observation be mitigated?
- Habituation
- Unobtrusive measures
What is a drawback of descriptive behaviour?
Cannot determine cause-and-effect
What is social desirability bias?
We respond in a socially appropriate manner rather than what we truly think or feel
How do case studies need to be followed up?
Carefully controlled and ethical studies To understand her behaviour
what is naturalistic observation?
The experimenter observed behaviour in the natural setting as it occurs in the real world
what is a representative sample?
One that reflects the important characteristics of the populations - such as not preserving portion of people in chosen population
What is descriptive research? What are the three types?
describes behaviour
- Survey research
- Naturalistic observation
- Case study
What is habituation in the context of natural observation?
When the participants adapt to the presence of the experimenter
what is a sample?
Subset of individuals from the larger population
