Week 7 (2) Flashcards
where does the mandibular nerve exit the cranial cavity
foramen ovale
which bone is the foramen ovale in
sphenoid bone
what branch comes off of the main trunk of the mandibular nerve after going through the foramen ovale
nerve to medial pterygoid
what happens after the nerve to medial pterygoid branches off
the mandibular nerve splits into anterior and posterior division
what nerves (in correct order) come off of the anterior division of the mandibular nerve
- nerve to masseter
- deep temporal nerves
- nerve to lateral pterygoid muscle
after giving off the nerve to lateral pterygoid, what is the anterior division of the mandibular nerve called (continuation of the anterior division)
buccal nerve
what is the course of the nerve to masseter
comes off of anterior division soon after branching, runs laterally, through the mandibular notch and enters deep aspect of the masseter
what is the course of the deep temporal nerves
branches to temporalis muscle, approach muscle from its medial side, go into deep aspect of the muscle
what is the last branch of the anteiror division of the mandibular nerve before it is called the buccal nerve
nerve to lateral pterygoid
Desribe the buccal nerve
the continuation of the anterior division once its motor supply has come off. Often called the long buccal nerve just because it is long, gives off cutaneous and mucosal branches
what are the branches of the posterior division of the mandibular nerve
- auriculotemporal
- inferior alveolar
- lingual
what does the lingual nerve supply
Purely sensory to its own side:
- anterior 2/3 of tongue
- floor of mouth
- lingual gingiva in lower jaw
what does the lingual nerve run close to
3rd molar, close relationship to the bone
what nerve joins the lingual nerve
chorda tympani
what is the chorda tympani a branch of
the facial nerve
