10 Styloid process and related muscles Flashcards
what bone is the styloid process part of
temporal bone
what muscles come from the styloid process
- stylopharyngeus
- stylohyoid
- styloglossus
what does the styloglossus muscle do
- pulls the tongue upwards and backwards
- important in early stages of swallowing
what does the stylohyoid muscle do
elevates the hyoid bone during swallowing
what does the stylopharyngeus muscle do
- blends into the wall of the pharynx
- stiffens and dilates nasopharynx during swallowing
what nerve supplies the styloglossus
hypoglossal nerve
what nerve supplies the stylohyoid muscle
facial nerve
what nerve supplies the stylopharyngeus nerve
glossopharyngeal nerve
what is unusual about the stylopharyngeus nerve
only muscle to be supplied by the glossopharyngeal nerve
what pharyngeal arch is the stylopharyngeus muscle derived from
3rd pharyngeal arch
apart from the stylopharyngeus muscle, what else does the glossopharyngeal nerve supply
- sensation to oropharynx
- sensation to posterior 1/3 of tongue
