8 (lymph nodes) Flashcards
where are the submental nodes
just behind the chin
what do the submental nodes drain
- tip of tongue
- mucosa at the front of the lip
- front of the floor of mouth
where are the submandibular nodes
- underneath mylohyoid
- near the submandibular salivary gland
what do the submandibular nodes drain
Area of face below imaginary line
(medial corner of eye to angle of mandible)
- superficial tissues of face
- most of oral cavity
- nasal cavity
- maxillary sinus
where are the parotid nodes
superficial part of parotid salivary gland
what do the parotid nodes drain
area above the imaginary line (medial corner of eye to angle of mandible)
where are the posterior auricular nodes
just behind ear
what do the posterior auricular nodes drain
more posterior parts of skull/face and ear
where are the occipital nodes
bottom of the skull at the back
what do the occipital nodes drain
posterior parts of skull
generally where are the lymph nodes of the head and neck
- at junction of head and neck (superficial)
- along the line of the internal jugular vein
what are the lymph nodes at the junction of the head and neck (superficial)
- submental
- submandibular
- parotid
- posteiror auricular
- occipital
what are the lymph nodes along the line of the internal jugular vein
- jugulodigastric node
- deep cervical nodes
- superficial cervical nodes
- jugulo-omohyoid node
- supraclavicular nodes
where is the jugulodigastric node
- near the digastric muscle
what does the jugulodigastric node drain
palatine tonsil
why is the jugulodigastric node particularly big
because the palatine tonsil is a site of high immune activation
what do the deep cervical nodes drain
- ALL superficial groups
- deep areas of the head (including orophargynx, nasopharynx and middle ear)
- posterior part of tongue
- larynx
- thyroid gland
- superficial cervical nodes
what do the superficial cervical nodes drain
more superficial structures
where is the jugulo-omohyoid node
near the omohyoid muscle
what does the jugulo-omohhoid node drain
lingual tonsil
why is the jugulo-omohyoid node so big
the lingual tonsil is a site of high immune activation
where are the supraclavicular nodes
just above the clavicle
what do the supraclavicular nodes drain
- neck
- chest
- stomach
e.g oesophageal or stomach malignancy
if a patient has generalised englargement of lymph nodes what might this suggest
- systemic disease of lymphoid organ
- something like glandular fever
how do you examine a patients lymph nodes
- stand behind them
- use two fingers to palpate and compare both sides
