A
- superiorly to the medial and inferior aspect of the zygomatic arch (origin)
- inferiorly to the lower border on the lateral surface of the ramus of the mandible (insertion)

- superiorly to the floor of the temporal fossa to the fascia that overlies it (origin)
- inferiorly to the coronoid process and to the anterior surface of the ramus (insertion)

- Inferior head: lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate (origin) and capsule of TMJ + pterygoid fovea (insertion)
- Superior head: greater wing of the sphenoid bone (origin) and capsule of the TMJ (insertion)
