week 3 part 2 Flashcards
what is inflammation
an important defense mechanism of the body
- immunovasular response to some form of insult
- cause by a stimulus
what is the goal of inflammation
responds to stimuli and restore balance
5 cardinal signs of inflammation
pain
heat
redness
swelling
loss of function
platelets
release blood clotting proteins at the wound site
mast cells
secrete chemical mediators
- vasodilation and increased capillary permeability
neutrophils
migrate to the site and secrete factors that kill pathogens, phagocytosis to remove pathogens and debris
macrophages
secrete cytokines, phagocytosis to remove pathogens and debris
- increase plasma protein, fever,chemotaxis
serous
watery fluid and small amounts of protein and white blood cells
fibrinous
-thick and sticky, higher cell and fibrin
purulent
thick and yellow higher white blood cells and cell debris
hemorrhagic
blood vessels damage
resolution
damages cells recover
regeneration
damaged cells are a cell type that can
divide by mitosis (e.g. epithelial cells) and can
therefore be replaced by identical cell type.
replacement
damaged cells are replaced by connective
tissue (scar tissue). Loss of function in this area.
the action of a chemical mediator
- bind to nearby nociceptors
-vasodilation and increase capillary permeability - attract immune cels to the site of injury
