week 1 Flashcards
What is Pathophysiology?
The study of the physiological changes in the body as a result of disease or injury
Pathology
the lab study of cell and tissue changes associated with disease
Pathogenesis
the events involved in the development of a disease
Primordial Prevention
targets social and economic policies effecting health
primary prevention
target risk factors leading to injury
secondary prevention
prevents injury and disease once exposure to risk factors occurs but still early preclinical stage
tertiary prevention
rehabilitating persons with injury disease to reduce complication
Etiology: The study of the cause(s) of a
disease
genetic, congenital defect, microorganism, immune dysfunction, metabolic dysfunction
Idiopathic
the cause of the disease is unknown
Iatrogenic
a treatment/procedure/error caused the disease
Predisposing Factors
risk factors/behaviours that promote development of a
disease
Prophylaxis
Measured taken to preserve health / prevent onset or progression of
disease
Characteristics of Disease
- Onset can be sudden/acute/insidious
- The disease itself can be acute or chronic
- Diseases can be classified by various stages, states, and periods
- Subclinical state, latent stage, incubation period, prodromal period
signs
something that can be measured
symptoms
a feeling
