Week 12 - Complex Trait Genetic Disorders Flashcards
Differences between monozygotic twins must be due to what
environment or a spontaneous mutation (rare)
What is concordance rate
The percentage of which the phenotypes between twins are the same
If the trait is completely controlled by the genes the concordance will be 1.0 as the twins are genetically identical.
higher concordance suggest what in heritability
greater heritability
low concordance in cleft lip disorder can be due to what
- A highly penetrant mutation spontaneously occurring in one twin after the egg splits
- Environmental factors influencing development
What model is used to explain variation of trait phenotypes within a population
the threshold model
What is the x-axis of the threshold model
Risk/Phenotype
the spectrum of phenotypic values for the trait
what is the y-axis of the threshold model
Frequency
the proportion or frequency of individuals within the population that exhibits a particular phenotype
What is the threshold line
The point where the trait becomes clinically expressed
What is both the distribution of the variable and the threshold influenced by
genetic and environmental factors
What are 2 examples of multifactorial conditions/ complex trait disorders
- Cardiovascular disease
- Bipolar and Schizophrenia
What is cardiovascular disease
Cardiovascular disease is a group of conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels. These conditions can lead to various health problems, including heart attacks, strokes, and other complications.
What shows that both genetic and environmental factors impact the development of cardiovascular disease
deaths from cardiovascular disease plateauing after a long trend of decreaseing
How are the risk alleles for disorders identified
Scientist have been able to collate genomes of individuals with certain disease as hence find common allele variants which are common amongst healthy and affected individuals. Through this they are able to determine the risk allele which contribute to the development of certain traits.
What are environmental risk factors for cardiovascular disease
- Poor diet
- Smoking
- Being overweight
- Alcohol
- Poor dental hygiene
- Poor mental health
What is schizophrenia and bipolar
mental disorders which are characterized by disturbances in thought processes, perceptions, emotion and behavior
