What are prodrugs
inactive compounds that are converted into active drugs in the body
What is chirality
A molecule with a chiral center which exists as a pair of non-superimposable mirror image (enantiomers)
What must a chiral center have
4 side chains which are all different
What does a full wedge indicate
the bond is coming out of the page
What does a broken wedge indicate
the bond is going into the page
How do you determine direction of priority for a chiral center
- Locate stereocentre (C*)
- Identify side chains (substituents) and assign priorities from 1(highest) to 4 (commonly H) based on atomic numbers
- Move molecule so side chain 4 is pointing away (broken wedge)
- read groups projecting out of the page in order from 1-3
- Assign direction of priorities (clockwise vs counter clockwise) (R or S)
What direction is R configuration (rectus)
Clockwise
