week 10 Disabilites Flashcards
what is a disability?
total partial loss of bodily function, disease or illness, thought distrubance, imparements on activities
what can cause disabilites?
psychological - ptsd, schizophernia
substance use - drug incided ABI
Acident - spinal chord injury
Ilnness - ambutation
genetic disorders
what is a ABI?
any type of injury that happens after birth
TBI, stroke, brain tumor, poisoning, infection/disease, near drowning, ETOH and drug abuse
what are the presentations of an ABI?
short term/immediate- LOC, drowsniess, dizziness, vomiting, headach, nausea, confusion, altered resps, crushings triad
long term- short term memory loss, altered sleep patterns, chages in personailty, depression, irratability, emotional/behavioural problems
what are the treatments for an ABI?
surgical - cerebral heamorrage controll, montor and control ICP, ensuring blood flow to the brain
Supportive- trating injuries/infections, manging seizures, manging other symptoms
what is wernicke encephalopathy?
acute syndrome due to reduced thimine commonly caused by hogh ETOH consumption resulting in nystagmas, ataxia and confusion
what is koraskoff syndrome?
chronic neuorlogical condition that occurs as a consequence of WE - demntia, encephalopathy, psychosis and seizures
how does illicit substance/ETOH use result in brain injuries?
increased BP and HR increases cerebral bleed risk which decreases perfusion and increases risk of hypoxic injuries/ Decreased conciousness decreasess resp drive and increases risk of aspiration and hypoxic injuries
