Weaknesses of AMS Flashcards
Voters Find AMS Confusing
Many people find the AMS system extremely confusing because of the two different types of ballot paper. This leads to many spoiled ballot papers and wasted votes. Some people don’t vote as they don’t understand how to.
For example, in the 2021 Scottish Parliament Election the constituency of East Renfrewshire reported 141 rejected votes.
No Direct Link Between MSPs and Voters
Regional MSPs do not have direct links with their constituents. The second ballot paper means voters choose a party, not their regional MSPs. Therefore, regional MSPs are often unknown to people as they are not directly chosen by them.
For example, in Kilmarnock many people are aware that Willie Coffey is their constituency MSP yet are unable to name any of their regional MSPs
AMS Usually Produces Coalition or Minority Governments
Coalition and minority governments can be criticised as they involve compromise. Compromise often leads to conflict between parties and therefore a weak government. Passing legislation (laws) can take an extremely long time.
