Voter apathy

A

Many people choose not to vote in elections as they do not care about and have a lack of interest in politics. When a person does not care about voting they are apathetic and do not believe that voting is important or worthwhile. Many people also believe that their vote will not change the way the country is governed and do not see the importance of
their vote

For example, in the 2021 Scottish Parliament election voter turnout was only 63.5%

Lack of Minority Representation

A

Some people choose not to vote as they struggle to identify with the candidates running. Ethnic minorities, women and those who suffer from disabilities sometimes choose not to vote as they believe that the candidates do not accurately reflect the ideas and beliefs that are important to them. It is this idea of a lack of minority representation.

For example, in the 2021 Scottish Parliament there are only 6 ethnic minority MSPs

Many people do not trust politicians to do what is
in the best interest of the majority and the public. Many citizens are sceptical about the interests and intentions of those in power.
