Reasons why people vote Flashcards
To Support a Political Party
Many people will vote in Scottish elections because they support a specific political party and want them to win or do well in an election.
For example, in the 2021 Scottish Parliament elections SNP won 44.2% of the vote.
To Exercise Their Democratic Right
Many people believe that it is not just a right but a responsibility to use their vote. By voting citizens are exercising their basic democratic rights; whereby anyone over the age of 16 in can vote in Scottish elections. Many citizens also believe that voting is a responsibility, especially when so many people around the world still do not have the right to vote
For example, some women choose to vote in Scottish elections because many women in countries such as Saudi Arabia face harassment and abuse if they attempt to vote
Fairer Representation
The voting system in Scotland provides fairer results. This is because the % of votes a party receives roughly = the number of seats in Scottish Parliament. This means voters get greater representation as even smaller parties have the chance to gain seats. This makes people more likely to vote as they know they
have a chance of gaining some representation.
For example, the SNP have 64 seats and the Scottish Green Party gained 8 seats in the 2021 Scottish Parliament Election.
